The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, is an international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 9 to 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang County, South Korea, with opening rounds in certain events being held on the eve of the opening ceremony, 8 February 2018.

Pyeongchang was selected as the host city in July 2011, during the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa. It marks the first time that South Korea has hosted the Winter Olympics, and the second Olympics held in the country since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

These Games will feature 102 events in fifteen sports disciplines, including the addition of big air snowboarding, mass start speed skating, mixed doubles curling, and mixed team alpine skiing to the Winter Olympic programme.

2,952 athletes from 92 National Olympic Committees will compete, including the debut of Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore.

 Pyeongchang, South Korea

Pyeongchang was elected as the host city at the 123rd IOC Session in Durban in 2011, earning the necessary majority of at least 48 votes in just one round of voting, with more votes than its competitors combined. Pyeongchang will be the third Asian city to host the Winter Games; the first two were in Japan, at Sapporo (1972) and Nagano (1998).

Torch Relay

The torch relay started on 24 October 2017 in Greece and will end at the start of the Olympics on 9 February 2018. On 1 November 2017 the relay entered Korea. The relay will last 101 days. There will be 7,500 torch bearers to represent the 75 million population living in Korea. There will also be 2018 support runners. The support runners will guard the torch and be messengers.

The torch and its bearers will travel by a diverse means of transportation, including by turtle ship in Hansando Island, sailboat on the Baengmagang River in Buyeo, marine cable car in Yeosu, zip-wire over Bamseom Island, steam train in the Gokseong Train Village, marine rail bike along the east coast in Samcheok, and by yacht in Busan Metropolitan City. There will also be robot torch relays in Jeju and Daejeon

Venues of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics

The compactness of the venues of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Pyeongchang has been one of the winning arguments of the bid. The Games are gathered around two main venues, the mountain resort of Alpensia for the outdoor sports such as Nordic and alpine skiing, bobsled, etc. and the coastal city of Gangneung for the indoor sports such as figure skating, hockey, curling, etc.) In addition there are two mountain stand-alone venues.

The Games will have a total of 13 competition venues, six of which will be new. The speed-skating rink was the last to begin construction, which started in October 2014.

2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the 2018  Winter Olympics take place at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in Pyeongchang, South Korea on 9 February 2018. It will begin at 20:00 KST.

 Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium will seat 35,000. No Olympic or Paralympic events will be held at the stadium, which will only be used for the opening and closing ceremonies.

The ceremony’s message will centre on peace, with five children from rural Gangwon province leading the ceremony, and will include animals, nature and a cast of 2,000. Augmented reality and 5G technology will also be incorporated in the event.

Sports Events

The 2018 Winter Olympics will feature 102 events in 15 sports, making it the first Winter Olympics to surpass 100 medal events. Four new disciplines in existing sports were introduced to the Winter Olympic programme in Pyeongchang, including big air snowboarding, mixed doubles curling, mass start speed skating, and mixed team alpine skiing.
