CHANDIGARH: The Centre has no plans to offer debt waiver to farmers in the country and respective states can take a call depending on their own budget, Union minister of state for finance and corporate affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Sunday.Meghwal’s statement has come as a setback for Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in Punjab which has been seeking Centre’s help to waive off agriculture loans as it had pledged in the run-up to the state assembly elections.

“The right to waive off farmers’ debt is a state issue. They can do it if their budget allows. The Centre is not in a position to waive loans,” replied Meghwal when asked about protests on the issue.

He, however, reiterated the Central government’s announcement of making all out efforts to double farmers’ income by 2022.

Meghwaldidn’t respond to the question about the government’s stand on the killing of five farmers in Mandsaur in police firing.

Chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh had called on PM Narendra Modi and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley in Delhi on March 22 seeking the central government’s assistance for farm loan waiver in Punjab. The CM had apprised them of Punjab’s Rs 80,000 crore farm debt.

Farmers protest in every part of India and how to waive off each of their loans, like done in Uttar Pradesh. Sometime it seems like PM Modi is the just like a trumpet without thinking the consequences and what can happen.  To win Uttar Pradesh election they just waived off farmer’s loan where one can easily be seen that such issue can also be raised in other part of country. Although how you can forget that your opposition will not take the benefit of your trumpet nature.

What do you believe all the protest are aired by Congress and other political parties? Or you feel that PM Modi should take steps after thinking the consequences. Please comment and share your views.
